SUMMARY:GPN Theme Week 2026
DESCRIPTION:The theme week focuses on the future of academic careers in Germany\, with special attention to the postdoctoral phase – a crucial yet structurally undefined stage in scientific career paths. It aims to unite perspectives from academia\, politics\, funding bodies\, and research management to analyze current challenges and develop practical solutions for more reliable and diverse career trajectories.  \nBased on recommendations from the German Science and Humanities Council\, three symposia will explore the definition of the postdoc phase\, staffing structure models\, and intersectoral mobility. A supporting program with plenary sessions\, a world café\, and a public panel discussion will foster exchange\, networking\, and international dialogue.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRead more!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate & Time:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganiser

SUMMARY:Beyond the Postdoc: At the EU Policy Table – A Career in Science Governance
DESCRIPTION:Are you curious about how European research policies affect your career? And how you as a postdoc can turn your research experience into a role shaping science policy at the EU level?  \nJoin our Beyond the Postdoc PAW Edition as we explore the evolving landscape of postdoc careers through the inspiring journey of Annelies Van de Ven\, a policy officer at the European Commission and former postdoc.  \nShe’ll discuss how she transitioned from local postdoc representation to influencing EU research policy\, as well as balancing international mobility and motherhood during her postdoc.  \nShe’ll also highlight key developments shaping postdocs’ futures\, including:  \n\nMSCA Fellowships – evolving support for early-career researchers \n\n\nSupervision standards – improving mentorship and support \n\n\nOpen Science – equity\, transparency\, and researcher agency \n\n\nChoose Europe – tackling precarity and building attractive research careers \n\nThis session is perfect for postdocs interested in how policy shapes research careers — and explore new career directions in research governance and science policy.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker:  \nAnnelies Van de Ven  \nDr. Annelies Van de Ven is a policy officer at the Directorate-General for Education\, Youth\, Sport and Culture of the European Commission\, working in the unit responsible for the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA). Besides contributing to the policies of the Actions themselves\, Annelies works alongside colleagues in promoting Open Science practices across the research community and in valorising the AI portfolio of the MSCA. Prior to joining the Commission\, Annelies was a postdoctoral researcher in archaeology at the Université catholique de Louvain where she also led the postdoctoral working group on internationalisation.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate and Time\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer\n\n\nGerman Postdoc NetworkView Organiser Websitecontact@germanpostdoc.net

SUMMARY:Navigating Intersectoral Mobility as an R&D Engineer and Guest Lecturer
DESCRIPTION:Are you wondering what comes next after your postdoc? Our lunch talk series Career Perspectives: Beyond the Postdoc offers insights into diverse career opportunities beyond postdoctoral research. \nIn this session\, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Jan Philipp Heners. As a research engineer (MTU Aero Engines AG) and guest lecturer (Berliner Hochschule für Technik/Hamburg School of Business Administration)\, he works at three different locations for multiple companies and institutions – in industry and academia. What sounds like a prime example of intersectoral mobility actually requires a great deal of forward planning and time management. In this lunch talk\, Dr. Heners will discuss how he came to be in these roles\, how he manages to juggle them all\, and the challenges and benefits that intersectoral mobility presents. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: \nDr. Jan Philipp Heners \nDr. Jan Philipp Heners received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Marine Engineering and Applied Mathematics from the Technical University of Hamburg and the University of Hamburg. Following his studies\, he joined MTU Aero Engines AG as a research engineer in the Department of Aerodynamics\, where he has continuously contributed to research on the aeroelastic analysis of aircraft engines. In parallel\, he served as a guest researcher at the Institute of Thermal Turbomachinery and Machinery Laboratory at the University of Stuttgart\, completing his PhD in 2022.His scientific work focuses on computational methods and aerodynamics for gas turbine flows\, with particular emphasis on the aeroelastic behavior of compressor and turbine blades. From 2021 to 2023\, he conducted postdoctoral research at the Chair of Applied Mathematics at Helmut Schmidt University Hamburg\, concentrating on adjoint optimization and algorithmic performance.Since 2019\, he has been an active member of the German Association for Computational Mechanics (GACM)\, contributing to the advancement of computational methods within the engineering community. In 2024\, Dr. Heners was appointed guest lecturer at the Berliner Hochschule für Technik and the Hamburg School of Business Administration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate and Time\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer \n\n\nGerman Postdoc NetworkView Organiser Websitecontact@germanpostdoc.net
