SUMMARY:Navigating Intersectoral Mobility as an R&D Engineer and Guest Lecturer
DESCRIPTION:Are you wondering what comes next after your postdoc? Our lunch talk series Career Perspectives: Beyond the Postdoc offers insights into diverse career opportunities beyond postdoctoral research. \nIn this session\, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Jan Philipp Heners. As a research engineer (MTU Aero Engines AG) and guest lecturer (Berliner Hochschule für Technik/Hamburg School of Business Administration)\, he works at three different locations for multiple companies and institutions – in industry and academia. What sounds like a prime example of intersectoral mobility actually requires a great deal of forward planning and time management. In this lunch talk\, Dr. Heners will discuss how he came to be in these roles\, how he manages to juggle them all\, and the challenges and benefits that intersectoral mobility presents. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: \nDr. Jan Philipp Heners \nDr. Jan Philipp Heners received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Marine Engineering and Applied Mathematics from the Technical University of Hamburg and the University of Hamburg. Following his studies\, he joined MTU Aero Engines AG as a research engineer in the Department of Aerodynamics\, where he has continuously contributed to research on the aeroelastic analysis of aircraft engines. In parallel\, he served as a guest researcher at the Institute of Thermal Turbomachinery and Machinery Laboratory at the University of Stuttgart\, completing his PhD in 2022.His scientific work focuses on computational methods and aerodynamics for gas turbine flows\, with particular emphasis on the aeroelastic behavior of compressor and turbine blades. From 2021 to 2023\, he conducted postdoctoral research at the Chair of Applied Mathematics at Helmut Schmidt University Hamburg\, concentrating on adjoint optimization and algorithmic performance.Since 2019\, he has been an active member of the German Association for Computational Mechanics (GACM)\, contributing to the advancement of computational methods within the engineering community. In 2024\, Dr. Heners was appointed guest lecturer at the Berliner Hochschule für Technik and the Hamburg School of Business Administration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate and Time\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer \n\n\nGerman Postdoc NetworkView Organiser Websitecontact@germanpostdoc.net

SUMMARY:Beyond Metrics: A Conversation on Academic Renewal and Strengthening the Advocacy of Early Career Researchers
DESCRIPTION:What does it take to create an academic culture that rewards genuine scientific contribution rather than the appearance of success? And how can early career researchers influence institutional change while navigating a system that is often driven by publication counts\, rankings\, and competition? \nJoin us for an open Lunch Talk and discuss these issues with Paul B. Rainey\, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology and Professor at ESPCI Paris. He has become a prominent voice in discussions on academic culture and institutional change. Through his writing on Substack\, an essay for Times Higher Education\, and public interviews such as in Forschung & Lehre\, he has consistently advocated for stronger recognition of early career researchers as active contributors to shaping the research landscape\, rather than merely adapting to it. \nIn this conversation\, you may explore questions such as: \n\nHow can researchers at R2/R3 career stages contribute to driving positive change within academic institutions?\nWhat distinguishes scientific excellence from successful career strategy\, and how can researchers navigate both?\nAre we using appropriate scientific evaluation criteria and how can academic systems break free from their reliance on proxy measures such as publication counts?\nWhat responsibilities do academic leaders have in fostering environments where emerging researchers can thrive and make an impact?\n\nThe Lunch Talk will begin with a short presentation by the speaker setting the scene\, followed by ample time for questions\, reflections\, and discussion. We warmly encourage attendees from all career stages and disciplines to join the exchange and contribute their perspectives. Whether you are concerned about a growing reliance on metrics\, interested in new approaches to evaluating research\, or simply curious about how to foster positive developments within academic institutions\, this event offers a unique opportunity to engage directly with a leading advocate for constructive change in academia. We look forward to a lively and thought-provoking discussion that will further fuel the advocacy work of the German Postdoc Network. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: \nProf. Dr. Paul B. Rainey \nPaul B. Rainey is Director of the department of microbial population biology at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön and professor at the laboratory for biophysics and evolution at ESPCI Paris\, PSL Research University Paris. His research falls within the field of experimental evolution: he uses bacterial populations as tools to watch evolution in real time. A particular focus is major evolutionary transitions – increasingly involving humans and AI. His writing on academic renewal focuses on research culture and the conditions that allow scholarship to flourish. He is particularly motivated by possibilities to empower early career researchers to effect change. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate and Time\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer \n\n\nGerman Postdoc NetworkView Organiser Websitecontact@germanpostdoc.net
