SUMMARY:From Academic Research to Policy Impact: Navigating the Science–Policy Interface
DESCRIPTION:Policymakers are confronted with multifaceted challenges\, including climate change\, biodiversity loss\, energy security\, the rise of populism\, and the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Addressing these complex issues requires scientific evidence. At the same time\, translating research findings into policy-relevant insights remains challenging\, and many researchers perceive policymaking processes in parliaments\, ministries\, and other public institutions as a “black box”. \nIn this virtual lunch talk\, Tome Sandevski (Goethe University Frankfurt) offers a practice-oriented introduction to the science–policy interface and to policymaking processes across key public institutions. Participants will gain an overview of written and dialogue-oriented formats of scientific policy advice that enable effective engagement with policymakers. He will discuss professorship appointment requirements\, prerequisites and processes\, and present a new format called tandem professorship (in German ‘Tandemprofessur’ or ‘Nachwuchsprofessur’). This format is designed to provide postdocs with professional experience outside of higher education in order to meet the requirements for a UAS professorship. DESCRIPTION:Paper mills – commercial companies that fabricate or manipulate scientific papers for profit – have grown into a global shadow industry. What once seemed like a marginal problem now affects major publishers\, respected journals\, and entire research fields. Recent studies suggest that fake publications are growing almost ten times faster than legitimate scientific output. \nIn this lunch talk\, science journalist Anja Reiter shares insights from months of investigative reporting for DIE ZEIT. Previously\, the trained journalist and science manager built up the communication and marketing division at the University of Cologne and headed a department at the Federal – Federal States Commission for Educational Planning and Research Funding. \nPatrick Honecker is a fellow of Donors’ Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany\, a winner of the German Rectors’ Conference’s Higher Education Communication Award and a board member of the Center for Science & Research Management.
