Advanced Imaging of Matter (CUI)

The central objective of the Cluster of Excellence “CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter” is to understand emergent phenomena of matter and – going one step further – to dynamically create new functionalities. Atoms bind together and form solids, molecules interact and react – new functionalities emerge with increasing complexity and growing system size. 185 international scientists from different disciplines such as physics, chemistry, and structural biology have joined forces to understand how collective behavior and functionality emerge from the interaction of many interacting building blocks.
The overarching research topic of the cluster is divided into three research areas, focusing on different levels of hierarchy: rational design of quantum matter, function and control in molecular matter, and functionality in complex heterogeneous systems. In its third funding period from 2026 until 2032, teams from University of Hamburg cooperate with scientists from Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter, and European XFEL GmbH in and around Hamburg.
