Controlling Microbes to Fight Infections (CMFI)

The Cluster of Excellence Controlling Microbes to Fight Infections (CMFI) started in 2019 and is based in Tübingen, Germany, with the University of Tübingen, the University Hospital Tübingen, and the Max Planck Institute for Biology being participating institutions.
CMFI brings together researchers from multiple institutions and departments to investigate how microbial communities can be understood and controlled in order to prevent and treat infectious diseases. The Cluster focuses on interactions between microbes, between microbes and their hosts, and on host-driven mechanisms of microbial control.
The scientific disciplines involved include microbiology, infection biology, immunology, microbiome research, systems and computational biology, bioinformatics, chemistry and natural product research, and clinical research. By integrating fundamental, translational, and clinical approaches, CMFI aims to develop innovative strategies that go beyond classical antimicrobial concepts and contribute to a deeper mechanistic understanding of infections.
