Future Forests – Adapting Complex Social-Ecological Forest Systems to Global Change

Future Forests began its activities on 1 January 2026. Based at the University of Freiburg in the Black Forest, the cluster partners include the Forest Research Institute of Baden-Württemberg (Freiburg) and the Thünen Institute (Braunschweig). Their overarching research goal is to generate essential and generic knowledge and tools for the analysis, development, and assessment of possible adaptation and transformation pathways (A&TPs) of forest social–ecological systems (SES). The cluster conducts research in the following disciplines: forest ecology, silviculture, biometry, sustainability and forest governance, biogeochemistry, biodiversity, hydrology, cultural anthropology, and others.
