Since 2019 the Cluster of Excellence Precision Medicine in Chronic Inflammation (PMI) has brought together scientists from various medical disciplines and fundamental research to work on an interdisciplinary basis to significantly improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of these diseases. The second funding period for the cluster began in 2026. The Cluster focuses on chronic inflammatory barrier diseases (CIBD). These include chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (e.g., Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), inflammatory skin diseases (e.g., psoriasis and atopic dermatitis), inflammatory rheumatic diseases (such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, and ankylosing spondylitis), and lung diseases (e.g., asthma and chronic bronchitis).
The interdisciplinary research network has around 400 members from Kiel University, the University of Lübeck, University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein, Research Center Borstel – Leibniz Lung Center, Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology Plön, Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design Kiel, Kiel Institute for the World Economy, and the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education, with Lungenclinic Grosshansdorf as a clinical partner.
