From Academic Research to Policy Impact: Navigating the Science–Policy Interface

Policymakers are confronted with multifaceted challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, energy security, the rise of populism, and the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Addressing these complex issues requires scientific evidence. At the same time, translating research findings into policy-relevant insights remains challenging, and many researchers perceive policymaking processes in parliaments, ministries, and other public institutions as a “black box”.

In this virtual lunch talk, Tome Sandevski (Goethe University Frankfurt) offers a practice-oriented introduction to the science–policy interface and to policymaking processes across key public institutions. Participants will gain an overview of written and dialogue-oriented formats of scientific policy advice that enable effective engagement with policymakers. The session will also highlight how such activities can support the demonstration of research impact, an increasingly important component of competitive funding applications.

Tome Sandevski

Tome Sandevski heads the Policy Engagement Unit at Goethe-University Frankfurt. His work focuses on developing and implementing innovative formats for science–policy dialogue. He regularly organizes policy events in the Frankfurt Rhine-Main region, Berlin, and Brussels.
