Photonics, Optics, and Engineering – Innovation Across Dimensions (PhoenixD)

PhoenixD, started in 2019, is adopting an innovative and holistic approach to the broad field of Technical Optics. It will actively address the challenge of developing entirely new optical systems that harmoniously blend hardware and software elements. A cutting-edge ‘5D photonics’ is being pioneered, where ground-breaking prototype systems arise from the interplay between a controllable optical system and real-time interacting intelligence. This innovation promises advancements in such fields as predictive environmental sensor networks, rapid protein-distribution measurements in blood, and energy-efficient accelerators for machine learning processing.
Core research questions pursued by PhoenixD revolve around what processes can be used to accurately model 5D photonic systems theoretically and simulate them computationally, and how their functionality can be predicted with increasing precision.
Leibniz University Hannover (LUH) is leading the Cluster and is composed of further local institutions: Technical University Braunschweig (TUBS), Laser Zentrum Hannover (LZH), Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute, AEI), and Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB). Involved traditional disciplines are physics, chemistry, mechanical and electrical engineering, computer sciences, and mathematics.
