Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies (CIBSS)

The Cluster of Excellence CIBSS – Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies of the University of Freiburg was established in 2019 and renewed from 2026-2032. The vision of the Cluster is to understand and control signal integration and cellular decision making. We study how cells in complex organisms communicate through biological signals to coordinate tasks, form tissues, and adapt to environmental conditions. In CIBSS, we take an ambitious across scales approach to understanding signalling from the molecular to the organismal level, and across all domains of life.
In addition to six Faculties of the University of Freiburg, the Cluster involves researchers from the Freiburg University Medical Center and the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics. During the second funding period we strive to deliver major advances in our understanding of signal contextualisation, compartmentalisation in signalling, signalling memory, and the logic of cellular decisions. Through a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative research program and the integration of signal research with innovative analytical and synthetic technologies, CIBSS is pioneering new concepts in signalling research and opening new avenues to address global challenges in biomedicine and sustainable agriculture.
