Within the CPI, researchers from Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen (JLU), Goethe University Frankfurt (JWGU), and the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research (MPI-HL) join forces. JLU contributes expertise in cardiopulmonary vasculature and the respiratory system, JWGU focuses on cardiovascular biology, and MPI-HL specializes in heart, lung, and vessel development and remodeling.
The CPI brings together basic, clinical, and translational researchers and experts to advance the understanding of cardiopulmonary diseases and to develop new treatments. Its members have already made groundbreaking contributions to cardiopulmonary science and to the development of novel therapeutic approaches.
The Cluster is dedicated to both basic and translational research. Its interdisciplinary team investigates mechanisms of cardiopulmonary diseases across model systems ranging from cell culture experiments to animal models and integrates these findings with clinical data.
CPI is well equipped to conduct translational studies that validate basic research findings in patients within clinical settings. In addition, physician-scientists within the Cluster are closely involved in clinical studies at every stage to evaluate new therapeutics and treatment strategies.
CPI has been funded as a Cluster of Excellence since 2005 (previously under the name Excellence Cluster Cardio-Pulmonary System).
