Navigating Intersectoral Mobility as an R&D Engineer and Guest Lecturer

October 22 @ 13:00 14:00

Are you wondering what comes next after your postdoc? Our lunch talk series Career Perspectives: Beyond the Postdoc offers insights into diverse career opportunities beyond postdoctoral research.

In this session, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Jan Philipp Heners. As a research engineer (MTU Aero Engines AG) and guest lecturer (Berliner Hochschule für Technik/Hamburg School of Business Administration), he works at three different locations for multiple companies and institutions – in industry and academia. What sounds like a prime example of intersectoral mobility actually requires a great deal of forward planning and time management. In this lunch talk, Dr. Heners will discuss how he came to be in these roles, how he manages to juggle them all, and the challenges and benefits that intersectoral mobility presents.

Speaker:

Dr. Jan Philipp Heners

Dr. Jan Philipp Heners received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Marine Engineering and Applied Mathematics from the Technical University of Hamburg and the University of Hamburg. Following his studies, he joined MTU Aero Engines AG as a research engineer in the Department of Aerodynamics, where he has continuously contributed to research on the aeroelastic analysis of aircraft engines. In parallel, he served as a guest researcher at the Institute of Thermal Turbomachinery and Machinery Laboratory at the University of Stuttgart, completing his PhD in 2022.
His scientific work focuses on computational methods and aerodynamics for gas turbine flows, with particular emphasis on the aeroelastic behavior of compressor and turbine blades. From 2021 to 2023, he conducted postdoctoral research at the Chair of Applied Mathematics at Helmut Schmidt University Hamburg, concentrating on adjoint optimization and algorithmic performance.
Since 2019, he has been an active member of the German Association for Computational Mechanics (GACM), contributing to the advancement of computational methods within the engineering community. In 2024, Dr. Heners was appointed guest lecturer at the Berliner Hochschule für Technik and the Hamburg School of Business Administration.
