Beyond Metrics: A Conversation on Academic Renewal and Strengthening the Advocacy of Early Career Researchers

November 2 @ 13:00 14:00

What does it take to create an academic culture that rewards genuine scientific contribution rather than the appearance of success? And how can early career researchers influence institutional change while navigating a system that is often driven by publication counts, rankings, and competition?

Join us for an open Lunch Talk and discuss these issues with Paul B. Rainey, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology and Professor at ESPCI Paris. He has become a prominent voice in discussions on academic culture and institutional change. Through his writing on Substack, an essay for Times Higher Education, and public interviews such as in Forschung & Lehre, he has consistently advocated for stronger recognition of early career researchers as active contributors to shaping the research landscape, rather than merely adapting to it.

In this conversation, you may explore questions such as:

  • How can researchers at R2/R3 career stages contribute to driving positive change within academic institutions?
  • What distinguishes scientific excellence from successful career strategy, and how can researchers navigate both?
  • Are we using appropriate scientific evaluation criteria and how can academic systems break free from their reliance on proxy measures such as publication counts?
  • What responsibilities do academic leaders have in fostering environments where emerging researchers can thrive and make an impact?

The Lunch Talk will begin with a short presentation by the speaker setting the scene, followed by ample time for questions, reflections, and discussion. We warmly encourage attendees from all career stages and disciplines to join the exchange and contribute their perspectives. Whether you are concerned about a growing reliance on metrics, interested in new approaches to evaluating research, or simply curious about how to foster positive developments within academic institutions, this event offers a unique opportunity to engage directly with a leading advocate for constructive change in academia. We look forward to a lively and thought-provoking discussion that will further fuel the advocacy work of the German Postdoc Network.

Speaker:

Prof. Dr. Paul B. Rainey

Paul B. Rainey is Director of the department of microbial population biology at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön and professor at the laboratory for biophysics and evolution at ESPCI Paris, PSL Research University Paris. His research falls within the field of experimental evolution: he uses bacterial populations as tools to watch evolution in real time. A particular focus is major evolutionary transitions – increasingly involving humans and AI. His writing on academic renewal focuses on research culture and the conditions that allow scholarship to flourish. He is particularly motivated by possibilities to empower early career researchers to effect change.
